Guide 10 · Rulesets

WoW Forever rulesets (there are no realms)

Normal, PvP, Roleplaying and Hardcore, and what you can't change later.

Our one recommendation

Pick Normal, unless your friends are going PvP.

On Normal, you only fight other players when you choose to. The ruleset matters more than usual because you can't group with people on a different ruleset, and you can't move a character to another one later. [source]

The four rulesets

  • Normal: "The baseline World of Warcraft experience," with player-versus-player combat "when they choose to engage in it." [source]
  • PvP: for players who want "every trip into contested territory to carry more danger, excitement, and open-world conflict." [source]
  • Roleplaying: for players who want to lean into the fantasy of Azeroth and find like-minded adventurers. [source]
  • Hardcore: death carries lasting consequences. Not at launch: Blizzard says it will be available "sometime after launch." [source]

Why there are no realms

Blizzard replaced the realm list with rulesets. Each ruleset works "more like a broad player ecosystem than a single traditional realm," so you don't have to pick the "right" launch realm. [source] Names are unique per region for the same reason; see Name reservation.

Rules that are easy to miss

  • No cross-ruleset groups. Grouping, dungeons and raids only work with players on the same ruleset. Battlegrounds can mix rulesets, except Hardcore. [source]
  • Horde and Alliance still can't group. [source]
  • No hopping. To play on another ruleset, you make a new character there. [source]
  • PvP is one faction only. Once you make an Alliance character on PvP, you can't make a Horde one there, and vice versa. Normal, Roleplaying and Hardcore allow both factions. [source]
  • Faction balance on PvP: new character creation for a faction may be temporarily limited, as in Season of Discovery. [source]
  • Account-wide: Collections and Legacy Points are shared across rulesets. Hardcore is handled differently: Hardcore progress can carry out, but not in. A Hardcore character that dies can transfer to another ruleset, including PvP. See Legacy builds. [source]
  • Language: set "Preferred Online Language" under Options → Languages and Social. It's account-wide, and once set you have to wait a day to change it again. [source]

Quick answers

Does WoW: Forever have realms?

No. Players choose a ruleset instead: Normal, PvP, Roleplaying, or Hardcore, which Blizzard says will be available sometime after launch. Players can only group with others on the same ruleset. [source]

Can I move my character to another ruleset?

Not freely. Blizzard says you need to create a new character in the other ruleset. A Hardcore character that dies can transfer to another ruleset. [source]

Unverified Not confirmed: population per ruleset, whether paid ruleset transfers will exist for characters that aren't Hardcore, and the Hardcore launch date. We found no Blizzard post that answers these.
