Student offers usually need verification (often via SheerID or a school email) and a payment method. Set a reminder before each renewal date.
Steps
- Read every syllabus's AI policy. Before setting anything up, note which of your courses allow AI, for what, and how to disclose it. See AI and school rules.
- Claim time-limited student offers you'll actually use. As of 2026-10-18: ChatGPT Plus 4 free months (claim by Oct 31, 2026) and Google AI Pro free for a year (redeem by Dec 31, 2026). Both need a payment method and renew at full price, so set a calendar reminder to cancel if you don't want to pay.
- Set up one notebook per course. Create a Gemini Notebook (or Notion page) for each class and add your syllabus, notes, and readings as you go. Walkthrough: flashcards & exam study.
- Set up Zotero on day one. Install Zotero and the browser connector so every source you read for any class is saved with correct citation details.
- Plan your semester. Put every exam and due date from your syllabi into Notion Calendar or your school calendar, then ask a chatbot to suggest a weekly study schedule you adjust yourself.
- Add course-specific tools only if needed. CS courses: GitHub Copilot Student, if your instructor allows it. Math: Wolfram|Alpha or ChatGPT study mode for step-by-step practice. Lectures: Otter, only where recording is allowed.
- Turn off training where you can. In each AI tool's settings, decide whether your chats can be used for training. See Models explained for where each setting lives. See Models explained.
- Use AI to learn every week. Quiz yourself from your notes, explain concepts back in your own words, and never hand in AI-written work.
